Fit for Travel

October 7th, 2009

Getting you there and back in the best shape possible.

Dawn McNevin Joseph, of The Right Fit Fitness, offers these tips to help you feel good when traveling.

Here are a few fitness tips to keep you feeling well (energized and pain free) throughout your flight and upon arrival at your destination. For those of you who fear doing arm circles and lunges down the aisles, these are for you. They are subtle but effective.

DRINK WATER

Before – During – After your flight.

The recycled air on a plane is very dry with little humidity (10-20%). Dehydration can lead to discomforts (dry mouth, throat, eyes and skin), and fatigue.

Drink 8 ounces of water for every hour you are onboard a plane.

When choosing a drink from the cart, keep in mind that alcohol and caffeine dehydrate the body.

 WALK AROUND

Before. During. After. your flight.

Why sit in the waiting room when you know you will be sitting for an indefinite amount of time once you board. Walk around the airport terminals.

While flying, don’t feel guilty about asking someone to move so you can get up and walk around. Prolonged sitting in cramped quarters causes pooling of blood in deep veins of the lower limbs, resulting in leg swelling, so try to move once every hour to hour and a half.

*Remember to plan your walk around in-flight meal services.

Upon arrival, get your leg joints moving after the flight (more than just to your taxi!). Use the stairs, not the escalator and walk around the baggage claim area while you are waiting for your luggage.

In Flight Exercises:

Ball Rolling

ballBring a tennis ball. Roll it under your feet (shoes off).? This relaxes the fascia and increases circulation.

You can also place it under your glute (butt cheek) to release glute tension.

 Pectoral (chest) Stretch

Stand parallel to the corner of a wall. Place one arm at a 90 angle on the wall (at the rear of the plane there is usually room).? standing Keep elbow and forearm supported. Step the same foot forward as arm that you are stretching. Lean your body gently forward as you rotate away from wall. The stretch should be felt across your chest and into the front of your shoulder.

 Glute (butt) Stretch

Sitting in your seat, cross one ankle over the opposite knee. Sit up tall through your spine. If you need an additional stretch, pike straight forward at your waist, keeping your low back straight. Hold for 1-3 minutes. Repeat if necessary. legoverfinalwhite
Note: This stretch often relieves back pain coming from tight hips.

Seated Upper Back Rotations

Sit up straight in your seat and cross arms across shoulders. Rotate gently as far as you can to one side, side bend to that side, unbend and rotate a little further. Repeat 3 times each side. Your upper back rotation should improve.crosschestwhite

Keep in mind that some airports have gyms. Bring your gym clothes or at least a pair of running shoes and make the best of a layover or delayed flight.

Don’t Just Do it, Do it Right.

Good news for travel agents

August 12th, 2009

From “Travel Industry Today”

Are travellers getting leery of Internet arrangements?

12 AUG 2009: Just one in three US online travellers feel that travel websites do a good job presenting travel choices  that’s down from 39% in 2008. Travellers believe they are taken for granted says a new study that suggests consumers arent pleased with the complicated process of planning and booking a trip online, and are exasperated to find they are expected to have the skills of travel agents.

A Forrester Research study, chronicled the dissatisfaction with do-it-yourself online travel in the US.? There are 15% fewer travellers who enjoy using the web in 2009 than there were in 2007, said the report.

“What we’ve seen is growing frustration,” said Henry Harteveldt, a Forrester travel analyst.

Consumers see other websites becoming easier to use  retail websites, banking websites, media websites. But travel is treading water as a category. There are very few travel companies that are really looking to improve the planning and booking process.

Instead customers are forced to figure out extra fees, wade through fine print and understand industry terms like the difference between a deluxe and a standard room, in addition to educating themselves about destinations, flights and hotels.

“Travel companies expect the consumer to behave like a travel agent,” said Hartveldt. “The question I always ask these guys is, Could your mother-in-law use your Web site without having to call you for help? The answer is always no.”

Harteveldt said a growing number of consumers appeared to be interested in using an offline travel agency, if they could find one.

“The fact that there are more people now who would consider using a good offline travel agent is telling me people are saying, Enough already,” he said.

Janet McKelvie adds… “So call your travel agent and avoid the frustration”.

? We cycle along quiet country roads through quintessential Provencale scenery enjoying great food and wine along the way. You can ride independently or with group members. 95% on tarmac and 5% on gravel/clay. The only day that has the gravel/clay section is on the last optional day ride onto the Camargue.?

Description:
• Cycle through the evocative plains of the Camargue
• Our route takes us to the very heart of Provence
• Explore the region’s amazing heritage including Roman remains
? ?

Winelands of Provence
We start our explorations from Roman Orange with a ride south to the celebrated vineyards of Chateuneuf du Pape, where there is time to enjoy a tasting of this famous wine. Returning via the rampart-encircled village of Caderouse, you may decide to visit Orange’s famous theatre and triumphal arch. Next we head through more vineyards towards Carpentras which allows an opportunity to take in Gigondas for outstanding views and a chance to enjoy its Grenache wines.
The Luberon: Heart of Provence
Our time in Carpentras gives several options. For those that would like a further ride we can recommend cycling to the east of town where you will find quintessential Provence in the Les Plus Belles Villages. From here it’s not far to Senanque to see the Cistercian abbey. Alternatively Avignon is close by, its famous bridge just one of many attractions. Leaving Carpentras we now head southeast through pretty Pernes le Fontaine, where more than 40 ancient fountains can be found, then over the Durance river to the narrow streets of Noves and on to St Remy de Provence.
Into the Carmargue
From St Remy we ride as ever along our favoured minor backroads this time around the base of the Chaines des Alpilles where many orchards are planted. We can pause at the remarkable 2nd century Barbegal Mill and wander through the stunning Montmajour Abbey before we reach Arles, onetime home of Van Gogh. South of the town the Rhone delta forms the wild lands of the Camargue, famous for their pink flamingos, black bulls and wild horses. A fabulous ride takes us southwest through the wetlands to Les Saintes Maries de la Mer – the perfect end to a week discovering the many different faces of Provence.

    Obama-themed Kenya tours

    January 26th, 2009
Adventure travel specialist Intrepid Travel has introduced a new eight-day, Obama-themed tour of Kenya, exploring the African roots of new US president Barack Obama. The tour features a visit to the town of Kogela, the president’s father’s birthplace, guided by one of Obama’s many cousins who will take the tour members to Senator Obama High School and the home of Mama Sarah, Obama’s step-grandmother. The balance of the tour comprises visits to the popular game parks of Lake Nakuru in the heart of the Rift Valley and Masai Mara National Reserve so the group – no more than 12 passengers – can experience some of Africa’s most spectacular nature and wildlife.? “Roots of Obama” includes transportation by safari minibus, guide, all breakfasts, six lunches (including one with the community in Kogela) and six dinners. The tour costs $2,835 (plus US$500 local payment and airfare). Accommodation is in a combination of hotels, lodges and tents. Departures are June 20 and 27, July 18 and 25 and Aug. 15 and 22. Intrepid ranks this itinerary two out of five for physical fitness level required.

    Itinerary:
Day 1 San Jose Our trip starts on Tuesday with your arrival in San Jose. There’s no activities planned for day one, so you can arrive at any time. There will be a pre-departure meeting at the joining hotel with your leader at 6.30pm this evening. Your leader will collect your local payment at the meeting. Please check the notice board in the foyer of the joining hotel for details of this meeting and for any messages from your leader. Please bring your passport and travel insurance to the briefing.Day 2 San Jose To-day is your own for exploring San Jose, the cosmopolitan capital of Costa Rica, and the centre of Costa Rica’s theatre and art world. The beautiful National Theatre is a ‘must-see’. San Jose’s most impressive public building, the National Theatre, is the centre of Costa Rican culture, with its superb interiors of marble staircases, gilded ceilings and local hardwood parquetry floors. The city boasts some excellent museums; among the most famous is the Jade Museum housing the world’s largest collection of American jade. Pre-Columbian gold, Costa Rican art and collections of live snakes and native reptiles are among some of the other museum offerings. The friendliness of the people, breathtaking flora and fauna, ancient artefacts, and its central market with all you can imagine make this city a fascinating and memorable cultural experience.Day 3 – 4 Monteverde We climb up the mountains to the village of Monteverde, or ‘Green Mountain’, in the northwest of Costa Rica. Here we set foot upon the outstanding Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. This preserved dense forest is just to the east of the community of Monteverde, a small village founded by North American Quakers in the 1950s. Experiencing the mystical and fragile environment here is a highlight of Costa Rica, with the constant cloud cover enveloping the top of the mountains and providing a misty magical tropical atmosphere in a place that is home to more than 2500 recorded species of plants, 400 birds and 100 species of mammals alone! As well as unexceeded bird-watching opportunities, we also have the option of taking the giant ‘Sky Walk’. Traversing the rope ladders and fixed rope bridges on a series of suspension bridges in the jungle canopy over 40 metres above ground, we can view a veritable spectrum of birdlife, marvel at other breathtaking fauna and flora and maybe glimpse the elusive, brilliant quetzal. Travelling from the cool highland cloud forest to the dense rainforest reveals to us the rich diversity of Costa Rica’s ecological highlights.? Day 5 – 6 La Fortuna – Arenal Our next stop is the town of La Fortuna, whose main attraction is the nearby spectacular Arenal Volcano (1633 metres). This active volcano? with its almost perfect conical shape is a spectacular sight, especially at night as red-hot molten lava can often be seen flowing from the crater. During our two-day stay we enjoy a hike around the volcano and absorb the stunning scenery that surrounds its base. There are also some great options for white-water rafting and horse riding. An optional night trek to the volcano is also recommended as there is often a display of molten lava and luminous rocks flying through the sky. We also get to enjoy a dip at the beautiful local waterfalls of La Catarata de Fortuna.Day 7 – 9 Puerto Viejo & Cahuita We spend the next three nights in the beautiful beach town of Puerto Viejo which is located on the Caribbean Sea and offers a wide range of activities including hiking, mountain biking , kayaking , diving, and snorkelling. Or you may prefer to soak up some of the local culture, discover the local reggae or sample the indigenous handicrafts on offer. On Day 8 we take a day trip to Cahuita which has a relaxed ambience while its authentic Creole culture remains evident in the country’s food and music. We also visit the Cahuita national park, wildlife abounds and there are good opportunities for sightings of coatis, sloths, armadillos, iguanas, howler and capuchin monkeys, as well as scores of other animals. Cahuita National Park is also renowned for its attractive unspoiled beaches, with long stretches of pristine white sand, coral reef and coastal rainforest, making it a haven for both swimming and snorkelling.

Day 10 San Jose On our final day we return by bus back to San Jose, where our short Costa Rican journey comes to an end. It is possible to book additional accommodation in San Jose, if you intend on staying on after the tour. If you are departing San Jose today, please do not book to depart until after 19:00 hrs.
