In November, Janet fulfilled a lifelong dream and took a trip to Antarctica. GAP Adventures offers an 11 day Antarctica Classic Voyage, sailing from Ushuaia (the world’s most southerly city) on the southern tip of Argentina, across the Drake Passage and along the Antarctic Peninsula aboard the MS Expedition.  There are few places on this planet where you can witness such large congregations of wildlife in such a seemingly inhospitable landscape!   Icebergs, penguins, seals, whales and possibily the albatross are on the viewing list.  Did you know there are at least 8 species of penguins?  Five are common in the region we visit.  Check back soon for Janet’s comments!

Description:  A true adventure to the world’s most remote wilderness! Our 11-day Antarctica Classic expedition focuses on the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula, home to some of the planet’s most impressive wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Throughout our voyage, our team of lecturers and guides will share their knowledge of the region’s remarkable natural history. Check out this mini video clip for a taste of the adventure….

Janet visits Rome, Athens and the Greek Islands

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Another area crossed off  “the Bucket List” ! For years I have wanted to visit the Greek Islands and have now had the opportunity .  After a few days to explore historic Rome , a 4 night cruise in the Greek islands was followed by a stopover and tour of Athens with Kumuka Tours.

Kumuka describes this tour :

Escape on a relaxing cruise to Greece and Turkey, visiting the most exquisite islands of Greece and the exciting resort town of Kusadasi in Turkey. Spend time on your cruise ship lying on the sundecks next to the onboard pool, take time out in the jacuzzis and have fun socializing in the comfortable lounges and bars. Enjoy the vibrant and cosmopolitan island of Mykonos, with the scenic windmills and white washed houses. Sail on to Turkey’s popular resort of Kusadasi for shopping at the colourful bazaar or perhaps take a visit to the breathtaking ancient ruins of Ephesus. Take in the holy atmosphere of Patmos where St John wrote the Apocalypse. Experience the beauty of Rhodes, full of fabulous beaches with clear blue waters, and a medieval city centre which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover the Venetian city of Heraklion in Crete and perhaps join an optional tour to the famous archaeological site of Knossos to see the extraordinary remains of the Minoan civilisation. Finally, on the island of Santorini, enjoy the stunning sunset and the magnificent view over the Aegean, before returning to Athens and a City Tour of this historic city which includes a visit to the Acropolis.

Colosseum

Colisseum in Rome

We had a stupendous trip. Absolutely fascinating, awesome, loaded with history, sights and experiences. We spent 3 days exploring Rome on foot and using the Ciao Roma open-top bus which allows you to get on and off at any of several stops at main tourist sites. We visited the Colosseum with a guided tour, which also allows access to a guided tour of the Forum. I would recommend doing both to get the full impact.

We also expored the Vatican and Sistine Chapel , (remember that  knees and shoulders must be covererd in churches etc), several other fascinating ruins, and admired the sculptures and architecture throughout the city. (more…)
