In November, Janet fulfilled a lifelong dream and took a trip to Antarctica. GAP Adventures offers an 11 day Antarctica Classic Voyage, sailing from Ushuaia (the world’s most southerly city) on the southern tip of Argentina, across the Drake Passage and along the Antarctic Peninsula aboard the MS Expedition.  There are few places on this planet where you can witness such large congregations of wildlife in such a seemingly inhospitable landscape!   Icebergs, penguins, seals, whales and possibily the albatross are on the viewing list.  Did you know there are at least 8 species of penguins?  Five are common in the region we visit.  Check back soon for Janet’s comments!

Description:  A true adventure to the world’s most remote wilderness! Our 11-day Antarctica Classic expedition focuses on the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula, home to some of the planet’s most impressive wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Throughout our voyage, our team of lecturers and guides will share their knowledge of the region’s remarkable natural history. Check out this mini video clip for a taste of the adventure….

Janet visits Rome, Athens and the Greek Islands

April 4th, 2011

Another area crossed off  “the Bucket List” ! For years I have wanted to visit the Greek Islands and have now had the opportunity .  After a few days to explore historic Rome , a 4 night cruise in the Greek islands was followed by a stopover and tour of Athens with Kumuka Tours.

Kumuka describes this tour :

Escape on a relaxing cruise to Greece and Turkey, visiting the most exquisite islands of Greece and the exciting resort town of Kusadasi in Turkey. Spend time on your cruise ship lying on the sundecks next to the onboard pool, take time out in the jacuzzis and have fun socializing in the comfortable lounges and bars. Enjoy the vibrant and cosmopolitan island of Mykonos, with the scenic windmills and white washed houses. Sail on to Turkey’s popular resort of Kusadasi for shopping at the colourful bazaar or perhaps take a visit to the breathtaking ancient ruins of Ephesus. Take in the holy atmosphere of Patmos where St John wrote the Apocalypse. Experience the beauty of Rhodes, full of fabulous beaches with clear blue waters, and a medieval city centre which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover the Venetian city of Heraklion in Crete and perhaps join an optional tour to the famous archaeological site of Knossos to see the extraordinary remains of the Minoan civilisation. Finally, on the island of Santorini, enjoy the stunning sunset and the magnificent view over the Aegean, before returning to Athens and a City Tour of this historic city which includes a visit to the Acropolis.

Colosseum

Colisseum in Rome

We had a stupendous trip. Absolutely fascinating, awesome, loaded with history, sights and experiences. We spent 3 days exploring Rome on foot and using the Ciao Roma open-top bus which allows you to get on and off at any of several stops at main tourist sites. We visited the Colosseum with a guided tour, which also allows access to a guided tour of the Forum. I would recommend doing both to get the full impact.

We also expored the Vatican and Sistine Chapel , (remember that  knees and shoulders must be covererd in churches etc), several other fascinating ruins, and admired the sculptures and architecture throughout the city. Read the rest of this entry »

Travel insurance is important – even for short jaunts.

March 10th, 2011

This article was written by Sheila Aue of travelinfo.ca. The same message applies regardless of your insurance compapny (Transat, Blue Cross, TIC etc).

RBC Insurance is advising travellers who travel across the border to access less expensive flight options to ensure that they are protected with comprehensive emergency travel medical insurance and adequate liability coverage on their auto insurance – even if they are only visiting for a day.

“Many Canadians don’t think about emergency medical or auto insurance when it comes to driving across the US border for short periods, because they are so close to home,” said Tim Bzowey, vice-president, auto and travel insurance, RBC Insurance. “Even if it’s just for a few hours, there are serious financial risks associated with not having adequate auto and/or emergency travel medical insurance anytime you’re driving in the US”

Facts and tips:
Auto Insurance:

• Before driving to the US, Canadians need to remember to check the impact of their coverage with their auto insurance provider and make sure they have sufficient coverage to match their specific needs.
• One of the most important protections in your auto insurance policy is Liability insurance, which can help protect you financially if you’re in an accident and found legally responsible for injuring someone or causing damage to another vehicle or property – up to your insured limit.
• In Canada, it’s mandatory to have minimum third-party liability insurance of C$200,000, except in Quebec and Nova Scotia, where the minimums are C$50,000 and C$500,000 respectively.
• Most drivers purchase C$1 million in liability coverage, but for those who frequently drive to the U.S., where the ability to sue is not restricted to serious injuries and liability settlements and can be extremely expensive, it’s highly recommended to purchase C$2 million. It’s usually only a fraction of the cost of your current insurance premium.
• If you are found legally responsible for injuring someone or causing damage to another vehicle or property, and the cost of damages exceed your liability coverage limit, you may be held personally responsible for paying the excess.
For example, if the courts ordered you to pay a million dollars in damages and you only have C$200,000 in liability coverage, you would have to pay the remaining C$800,000 out-of-pocket.
Travel Insurance:
• Medical assistance in the US can be very expensive. A two-day stay in a US hospital for chest discomfort could cost US$10,800.
• Government health insurance plans typically do not cover all out-of-country expenses. For example, an appendectomy, which usually involves a one-day stay, could cost US $10,000, with only US$1,100 covered by the health plan.
• Review your credit card contracts and any existing policies before you travel. Credit cards often provide coverage for a limited number of days or limit the amount travellers can claim and not all credit cards offer medical insurance coverage. Employment benefits may not cover all medical emergencies and have limited travel benefits.
• Check any existing travel insurance coverage to make sure it extends to your children, as many policies have age limits for children covered under their parents’ insurance.
• For travellers who cross the border multiple times a year (and especially for last minute trips), a multi-trip annual insurance plan can save you money and takes the worry away from having to purchase travel insurance every time you plan a trip.

Janet adds:  Insurance. Don:t leave home without it.

What exceptional service even in the face of chaos. So to have a holiday where you can say “no worries, mate”, consider Relaxing Journeys.

Customer comments

March 1st, 2011

Hey Janet,

I’ve been meaning to send you a big thank you for all your help with?
us last minute hooligans!!

And I was going to let you know the trip was good.? We hit amazing?
weather (a few people leaving as we got there were saying it was?
pretty cool the prior week-unable to sit by the pool cool…) so we?
were lucky that way.? The resort was very pretty, great food at some?
of the restaurants, not quite as great at one, and amazing at?
another.? (Would highly recommend it though).

My brother got the swim-up suite, so we upgraded to upstairs from?
him.? For us both to get the suites we would have had to be in?
different buildings-didn’t make much sense (especially at $75 US per?
person per night-just if anyone asks the cost of an upgrade)

BUT I don’t think I’d go again.? I found I was disappointed (maybe?
just pining for Cuba still).? But seriously, there was a lot of?
pressure to do tours that were inappropriate for the kids (ie-a?
pirate ship cruise was really promoted as a family event when it was?
waaaaaay more of a booze cruise where we didn’t get fed until close?
to 10pm-but still was a neat thing to do and great food).? Just not?
for small kids.? It’s called Captain Hook-if anyone asks (if their?
kids are a bit bigger and can eat late and get home well after?
midnight it was still kinda fun.)? It’s Captain Hook against the?
mexican version of Johnny Depp.
I think the biggest disappointment though was the lack of sincerity?
from the workers.? I really got the impression that they didn’t care?
if you were from Canada, US, or Quebec (which they were waaaay ruder?
than any american-dunno what’s up with that).? My brother got asked?
at least twice how much crack was in Canada by different people.? We?
tipped our housekeeper every day, and my brother the non-tipper?
always had nicer “towel animals” and a cleaner room than we ever?
had.? Maybe because he paid a teeny little bit more for his room…? ?
The waiter service was quite poor at 2 of the buffets for how non-
busy they were often.
The sunwing rep on the bus from the airport was amazing!!! A lot of?
very useful information!? (like to stay away from timeshare people…?
which my sister-in law didn’t know… lol)? She was told by the?
concierge that it was a “tour of the resort to see what all they had?
to offer” over breakfast.

I’m sure none of what I say comes as a surprise to you-we both knew?
Cuba was where I should have gone… sigh.? BUT not with the kids for?
first trip, and none of the kids got sick, heck none of us adults got?
sick!? And we all got a bit of a tan and drank some realllllly good?
mojitos!? And none of that can be anywhere close to bad.

Thanks again,
I’ll be giving you a call when we scrimp enough to make it to Cuba!!
(I just saw a seat sale out of Calgary return to Holguin for $99)?
sigh again :)
